JACKPOT visits Lox, Stock and Barrel

Hello all!

I visited a new brunch place last Saturday as I’m really keen to try various brunch places to see where the best place to have brunch is. I really wanted to go to this other cafe but as it was full I decided to go to the next cafe on my list, this being Lox, Stock and Barrel which I had seen a few posts about and wanted to see whether this was a worthwhile place to go and have brunch.

Lox, Stock and Barrel is located in Bondi Beach. I’m finding that there are more and more cafes opening up in Bondi and although a lot of them are quite small, these cafes are usually packed full of customers even early in the morning. The cafe offers both breakfast and lunch but since I enjoy breakfast more I’m always wanting to eat breakfast foods whenever I try a new cafe. The cafe also sell freshly baked treats such as brioche scrolls if you’re in the mood to eat something later on and you can take away the bagels as well to eat at home.

Mr Muscles and I got to the cafe around 9 and the place was rather packed but we were in luck as just as we got there a couple were just finishing up so we waited a few minutes to be seated. We were seated on the table facing the window of the cafe as all the other tables inside the cafe were full. It’s quite a small cafe with not a lot of tables so you are more likely to wait for a table if you come a bit later in the morning.

Lox, Stock and Barrel specialise in bagels offering different variations of bagels that are made fresh on the premises and can be eaten fresh or toasted. You can have your bagels as is with some jams or spreads or you can have them with various savoury fillings. They also offer other various dishes for people who aren’t interested in eating bagels such as french toast, porridge, muesli etc.

Mr Muscles was feeling extra hungry so he ordered a side of potato hash which happened to come out before his meal so he decided to eat this first before his main meal. Mr Muscles at first was confused by the flavours on the dish as he ate everything separately to try each part of the dish however once he started to eat all the ingredients together, he really enjoyed the dish and thought that this was a really well thought out dish. Also, the fact that there was some fried potato in this dish, Mr Muscles could not have been more happier with his choice.

Reuben

Reuben – Wagyu Corned Beef, Swiss & Sauerkraut on a Seeds & Spices Bagel $14.00

Mr Muscles decided to order the Reuben for his main meal for breakfast. When the Reuben came out and was displayed in front of him, I could tell he was really happy he chose this dish especially because it looked like a pretty hearty dish and perhaps more for people who are feeling that extra bit hungry. Mr Muscles devoured each bit of his sandwich and kept telling me how much he enjoyed his choice of dish. The bagel was lightly toasted and it went really nicely with the soft wagyu corned beef. Mr Muscles said he would definitely come back to eat this again. Upon finishing off his meal, Mr Muscles felt really full so much so that he skipped lunch later on in the day as he was still full from eating his sandwich. Suffice to say, it was well worth the money!

I was really confused as what to order from the menu as I wasn’t sure if I wanted something sweet like I usually do or something savoury instead. As this place specialises in bagel I thought that I should order a bagel to see whether they were any good. Unfortunately I had a not so pleasant experience as I ordered a wholemeal bagel to go with jam and ricotta but found out as they placed the dish in front of me that they had given me a plain bagel instead. I told them I ordered a wholemeal one but they said they didn’t have any. If they had told me earlier I might have picked a different bagel. I’m not one to complain so I just stuck with the plain bagel. Unfortunately the plain bagel they gave me was severely burnt on one side so it was really tough to eat and you couldn’t taste the softness of the inner bits of the bagel because of it like other bagels I have eaten. Also as they didn’t ask whether I wanted it fresh or toasted, they gave it to me toasted. I think I’ll have to try the bagels again next time and order them fresh as the toasted bagels was not so appealing. I sat there eating the burnt bagel and the bits that were not so burnt I managed to eat. A not so pleasing experience compared to Mr Muscles who was happy with both his meals.

Mr Muscles knew I wasn’t too happy with my meal so he ordered me a hazelnut and almond brioche scroll to take away to eat after as he knew some sweet food would cheer me up and let me just say it really did. The brioche scroll saved the day and the cafe was redeemed after that.

The scroll was really lovely and would have been even better if it was warmed up a bit but I was more than happy to eat it just as it was. The brioche was light and soft compared to the crunch that you got from the hazelnut and almond pieces and the sugar pieces in the centre of the brioche. It was a pretty great scroll and I would have been more than happy to just eat this as my breakfast. Lesson learned is that I should always stick to what I like to eat for breakfast and not diverge away from the norm.

Apart from the bagel mishap, Mr Muscles and I enjoyed our visit at Lox, Stock & Barrel. We will definitely have to go back to try out all the other food items and also to try the other bagels in the hopes that there won’t be the same mishap again.

JACKPOT celebrates Miss Puff’s 30th at Graze

Hello dear readers!

Hope you all are having a good week so far despite the gloomy weather today!

Just to recap my weekend, Mr Muscles and I were invited to celebrate Miss Puff’s (formerly Miss Pen) 30th birthday at Graze in Pyrmont. I was really excited about this dinner because I hadn’t eaten here before and was really keen to try out all the various dishes on offer which I had read on various blogs. We had told Miss Puff that this restaurant might be a nice place to celebrate her birthday with her friends and so we were happy when she decided to have her dinner there.

The restaurant had given Miss Puff the top floor of the restaurant so that we basically had the top floor to ourselves with a large table in the middle of the room. It was a really nice setup and it was even better as it made the dinner feel a lot more private and intimate. Miss Puff and Mr Kecap Manis Boy chose dishes from the menu before the dinner for everyone to share. They ordered a few entrees, mains and 2 desserts for everyone to share. I was so blown away at how good the food was so much so that I really want to go back again and try the other dishes on the menu. I really enjoyed all the dishes that they chose and usually that doesn’t happen often when I go to a restaurant.

It was great catching up with Miss Puff (who looked lovely on the night by the way) and everyone seemed to really enjoy the night catching up with each other and of course enjoying the food together. Thanks again Miss Puff for inviting us and to Mr Kecap Manis Boy as well for organising the whole night. It was a lot of fun and we can’t wait to catch up again soon!

The Food:

Cauliflower Milkshake

Cauliflower Milkshake, Jamon & Cheese Toasty

I have to agree with all the other bloggers and say that this was such an amazing dish! It was rich and decadent yet so moreish that it made you want to keep drinking that cauliflower milkshake (similar to a creamy cauliflower soup) and that toasty was amazing where most of us decided to keep dunking it into the cauliflower milkshake to add more flavour. This was definitely one of the highlights of the night and I could tell that most people were thinking the same because the dishes soon disappeared in a matter of minutes.

We were all confused as to what this dish was. I asked people around me and we finally found out that the filling was crab. Besides the confusion at the beginning, once we bit into the croquettes everyone thought it was a really lovely dish. It was nice and crumbly on the exterior of the croquettes and creamy and soft on the inside. Once again, this was another enjoyable dish and I didn’t mind it being deep-fried as it wasn’t overly oily.

Ocean Trout

Wood fired Tasmanian Salmon served with cucumber and lemon myrtle creme fraiche

This was another really stand out dish. Mr Muscles and I both agreed that this was another favourite dish of the night for us. The salmon was served on a black wooden board and I loved the charring on salmon. The salmon had been wonderfully cooked and was quite tender and pink still once you cut into it. It just melted in your mouth with each bite and it left me wanting to eat more. I would definitely order this again next time I come here. Ms S next to me really loved the creme fraiche and thought it paired really well with the fish.

Risotto

The Mushroom Risotto was another great dish…rich and decadent but really flavoursome too. It was good we got to share a lot of these dishes as I think that a whole portion would have been too filling so I was happy I got to try a bit of everything and  small serving each time meant there was still room for dessert ;P

This was a really well executed dish and I loved the saltiness from the jamon which didn’t overpower the flathead fillets but complimented it really well. The roasted carrot puree was really addictive that I went back for seconds of just the carrots.

Beef

Slow Cooked Wagyu Beef Shin served with a Black Pepper Jus

The slow cooked beef shin was another stand out dish of the night. The beef shin was unbelievably tender and just melted in your mouth with every bite. Each bite was so rich that you could really taste each tender piece and the bits of fat laced within the beef. Obviously not so good for the diet but definitely something to eat for a cheat meal ;P Mr Muscles really enjoyed this dish and thought it was a highlight from the dinner.

Pork Belly

I didn’t try this dish as I am not a fan of pork belly but the lovers of pork belly on the table seemed to really enjoy the dish.

Truffled Potatoes

A dinner isn’t a dinner without some fried potato goodness well more in the case of Mr Muscles who cannot go a week without indulging in some fried potato of some sort whether it be hot chips, wedges or hash browns so you can imagine the look on Mr Muscles face when he saw this dish come out. Suddenly it was as if he had built a second stomach and was eyeing down the potatoes eagerly awaiting his turn to try the truffled potatoes. I assumed they were good as he went back for seconds and thirds ;P

Eton Mess

Eton Mess, Strawberries, Meringue and Double Cream

Although I’m not a fan of cream I didn’t mind this. Usually the Eton Messes I have tried are full of too much cream or way too much meringue but I thought Graze did this dessert really well with a good balance of meringue, cream and strawberries. I didn’t want to fill up on this as I knew there was a second dessert to try and also the birthday cake.

Chocolate Parfait

Iced Chocolate Parfait, Orange Foam and Mint Oil

I really liked this dessert as it wasn’t too heavy. The chocolate parfait paired well together with the oranges and the mint oil. This was a really nice dessert and all the flavours seemed to work well together.

But none of these desserts compared to the actual birthday cake for Miss Puff which was the infamous Gelato Messina’s “Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom” Cake consisting of dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies and dulce de leche topped with layers of vanilla cream, chocolate sponge,  a red ganache and white chocolate buttons to finish. The stalk itself is filled with dulce de leche caramel surrounded by dark chocolate gelato. The mushroom then sits on grass made out of popping candy and crushed biscuit…basically a very rich and decadent birthday cake that tasted soooo amazing! Although it was so rich, I found myself wanting more. And the popping candy as the grass was really cleverly done and tasted really nice once we were able to break it apart. It was a great way to end the night with such a delicious cake!

JACKPOT’s baking experiments…

Hello dear readers!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

I know it’s been a bit slow on the posting front but I’ve been having a not so lucky month this April and been busy with lots of training for basketball as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a few new posts soon but bear with me in the meantime!

I made vegan Chocolate Pear and Almond Muffins a few weeks ago for Miss Shortee’s birthday and I forgot to post the recipe but because the muffins didn’t turn out as what I really wanted I won’t be posting the recipe this time around and will just show you the photos from this baking experiment until I perfect the recipe further. To be honest, I moulded this recipe on the fact that I bought some lovely pears from the supermarket and really wanted to bake with them. Also, I had some whole raw blanched almonds in my pantry so figured that this might go well with the chocolate and the pear in the muffins and so voila chocolate pear and almond muffins resulted ;P

I definitely need to work on the presentation of these muffins as I think i overfilled the cupcake liners and some of the batter spilled a bit over the sides of some of the muffins due to me greedily wanting to fit all the batter into just 12 muffins when really it could have made quite a few more muffins but taste wise the muffins were soft with a nice little crunch from the almonds. I would also probably cook the pears down to make them softer next time around as I thought they were still quite hard after baking them in the oven.

And I thought I’d post a picture of another baking experiment where I made my version of “Bolu Kukus” aka Indonesian steamed sponge cakes using pandan and strawberry pastes to make those lovely bright colours in the sponge. I was really happy with this as the sponge cakes “bloomed” as my mum would say. A lot of the time after baking these sponge cakes, my sponge cakes didn’t bloom and I was really starting to think that I was no good at baking these sponge cakes anymore but luckily this time around something must have worked out. Can’t wait to make these again! =)

JACKPOT celebrates Easter in Melbourne Part 2

Time for part 2 of my extra long blog post about my Easter in Melbourne.

Miss G and Mr D took us to Lux Bite after lunch so we could have a look at the desserts on offer there. I had read a lot about Lux Bite so I was really eager to check out all their desserts plus their macarons which I had heard were the best in Melbourne. All the desserts looked so intricate that they almost looked too pretty to eat. I could tell that these desserts were nothing but indulgent and rich. I was super sad that by the time we got here I was still so full that I couldn’t fit in any dessert. I’m going to have to come back next time on my next trip down to Melbourne. Everything looked so delicious as I gazed intently on the cabinet full of desserts. Mr Muscles knew deep down that I wanted to try one but I showed some self-restraint and said no this time…I regretted it about 10 minutes later after we walked out of the shop ;P

Lux Bite’s infamous macarons – how cool does the freckles one look on the very far right hand side – definitely trying one next time!

We visited the Prahran markets for the first time as Miss G and Mr D needed to get a few things from there. Going to the markets was such a wonderful experience and I only wish that there were more markets like this open for longer in Sydney. Most the markets I go to on the weekend usually close early so I never get a chance to go to some of the markets. There were so many stalls at this market ranging from people selling honey, organic foods, a deli, fish and meats, fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, flowers and the like. I honestly probably could have spent a lot longer at this market i.e. all day because there was just so much to look at. And what was even better was at the back of this market, I found an Essential Ingredient where I dragged Mr Muscles with me to go exploring in the shop. I spent ages looking around trying to find new baking equipment and recipe books. In the end I picked up a really cool asian dessert recipe book which I plan to filter through and draw ideas from.

To finish off our Melbourne trip Mr Muscles and I decided to have breakfast at Cumulus Inc the next day as I had really wanted to try one of Melbourne’s popular breakfast/brunch places. We got up quite early so we were the first customers for the day and had preference to sit anywhere in the cafe. The cafe is modern and has a large kitchen where you can view the chefs in the kitchen preparing your food. I had read about this place in many blog posts and was keen to try the crumpets and madeleines that a lot of people had blogged about.

Mr Muscles wanted to eat something a lot heartier for breakfast as he had a big night and was feeling under the weather so to speak so he decided to order the beans and egg dish.

Mr Muscles didn’t really enjoy his breakfast. He thought the food was ok but didn’t really like the sausage they used for the dish. I think he was expecting something different and so it didn’t really satisfy his hunger. Also he thought it was quite a pricey meal for what he got.

I decided to order the crumpets instead of the madeleines as I wanted something slightly savoury and the madeleines take longer to make so I figured I should stick to something that didn’t take too long.

I was very surprised when my crumpets came out. It looked so different to the crumpets I used to eat when I was a kid that you get from the local supermarket. Not at all soft but rather crunchy on the outside and chewier on the inside. It was a very different experience of eating crumpets. I loved the honey and ricotta as they both paired wonderfully together with the savoury taste of the crumpets to give that slight savoury sweet flavour that I was after. I think I prefer the softer version of these as I thought these had been fried a bit too much in the pan. The crumpets itself were not filling however and Mr Muscles could see I was hungry still so he ordered the granola for him and I to share.

I really loved this dish and probably should have ordered this instead of my crumpets as this is my usual go to breakfast when I dine out for breakfast or brunch. The granola had a lovely crunch with various nuts, seeds and sultanas and it paired really well with the yoghurt and the tart flavour of the rhubarb and the sweetness of the strawberries.

I would like to go back to Cumulus to try out their dinner menu as I know this place gets really packed out for dinner. Also, I have yet to try their madeleines with lemon curd so that’s something I will come back for when I have more time.

All in all, it was a great way to spend most of the long weekend before Mr Muscles and I had to work on the Easter Monday. Great catching up with friends, exploring new places to eat and indulging in various foods which meant massive food comas for most of the trip ;P

JACKPOT celebrates Easter in Melbourne Part 1

Hello dear readers!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week so far especially given the Easter long weekend meaning that this week is just a little bit shorter =)

I spent some of my Easter in Melbourne catching up with friends, playing a bit of basketball and of course indulging in various foods. As soon as I stepped into Melbourne it was as if I had gained the capacity of two stomaches and I could eat nearly twice or three times as much as I usually would in Sydney…yes food coma indeed…most times were spent clutching my stomach after over eating and although I knew I was full most of the time, the lure of the oh so yummy desserts on offer in Melbourne pulled me back in each time…I’m definitely guilty as charged when it comes to over eating this Easter…and did I mention Mr Muscles bought me an Easter treat which consisted of Lindt Easter Eggs (one large one and some small ones) which as soon as I received it I devoured most of the large easter egg…damn my sweet tooth again…I never learn for some reason! ;P

I will most likely be splitting this blog post into two parts as I realised I took a lot of photos from my Easter trip in Melbourne so stay tuned for Part 2.

Mr Muscles and I decided to get some dessert on the first night we arrived in Melbourne so we took a nice stroll down to Chinatown in search of some Taiwanese desserts. I wanted to go to Dessert Story as I had heard a lot about this place but as soon as we got there the place was packed and people were queuing outside the place. Dessert Story seems very similar to Meet Fresh offering the usual grass jelly and tofu pudding desserts. As I didn’t want to wait in line, we decided to go searching for other dessert places to kill my sweet tooth craving. Meet Fresh was just down the road but as we passed it, we noticed how busy the lines were as well. I didn’t realise how much of a mission it was to find a dessert place to eat at in Melbourne on Good Friday. Clearly everyone had thought the same thing and wanted to indulge in some dessert on the public holiday hence the masses of people lining up for these asian desserts. In the end Mr Muscles and I found a small Taiwanese dessert place which had a table available so we decided to try it out. I thought the desserts were ok but wasn’t as good as Meet Fresh back in Sydney. The sweet potato and taro balls were not of the same texture or consistency that Meet Fresh tastes like.

I was feeling a bit cold from the weather in Melbourne so decided to get a hot dessert instead of an icy one. I chose the silky tofu pudding in ginger soup. I was hoping that this would be similar to what they serve in yum cha but the consistency again wasn’t really there. However it did the job of warming me up. I still rather enjoyed the dessert despite not being what I had expected. It was lovely and gingery. Definitely something I would eat during winter.

The next morning, Mr Muscles and I couldn’t quite work out where to have breakfast. Initially we had planned to eat somewhere near the basketball courts for convenience but as we got up relatively early we decided to eat downstairs of the hotel and splurge on a buffet breakfast. Grand Hyatt (Collins Kitchen) have a very lavish buffet breakfast on offer with various foods to suit everyone’s taste buds. I was in awe of all the food and couldn’t quite decide what to eat at times but knew that I wanted to try nearly everything. It’s quite pricey for $40 a person but it’s definitely a one time thing that you have to experience. I can’t even remember the last time I had a proper buffet breakfast but I was happy that we tried this out as this was definitely an indulging weekend for the both of us. Though I started regretting the choice of a buffet breakfast after I started playing basketball not long after as I managed to overeat. My plan was simple: do not overeat (on the basis that I knew I was about to play basketball)…somewhere along the way my plan failed miserably as my stomach got the better of me and everything I saw I just wanted to try…fail indeed…

Thanks Mr Muscles for taking all these photos for me…I felt slightly shy about taking so many photos of the buffet whilst there were cooks looking over each time I had my camera in my hand, so Mr Muscles decided to go around taking photos instead.

I started off my buffet breakfast with healthier items to not make me feel so bad when I started to indulge in all the sweet food. I realised that I didn’t eat much savoury food and stuck to all things sweet whilst Mr Muscles chose to eat all savoury foods not indulging in anything sweet.

I really loved the do it yourself yoghurt, granola and fruit that I ended up getting 2 servings of this as it was really tasty.

I was quite disappointed with my pancakes. They were dry and not very fluffy.

Danish and Croissant

I chose the Danish and croissant because it looked quite tasty but upon eating it, I was disappointed as it was again dry =(

Chocolate Hot Cross Bun

Since it was Easter I decided to try their hot cross buns. There were the standard hot cross buns and then a chocolate and cherry one. I decided to go with the chocolate one. Again the bun was quite dry so it made it difficult to eat.

I loved their banana bread and you had the option of toasting it which really made a difference. It was so good that I was tempted to get another one but since I had eaten so much and had chosen to eat this last I couldn’t fit another one in. The biscuits were really lovely as well with a nice crunch to them. I really adored the almond tuiles and definitely could have gone back for seconds, thirds…but alas food coma was getting the better of me.

I realised I didn’t take too many photos of the savoury food that Mr Muscles ate. He also thought that while there were plenty of options for food at this buffet, the taste of the food was lacking in some areas. It was a bit of a hit and miss with various foods. Mr Muscles tried out some of the Asian foods such as the steamed dumplings and the fried rice. He quite enjoyed the fried rice and he also got a portion of scrambled eggs so that we could share. I quite enjoyed the scrambled eggs and that was perhaps the only savoury thing I ate apart from some bread I sliced for myself and toasted.

I really loved that there was a whole station dedicated to dessert. You could either choose pancakes or waffles. Because my pancakes were dry I wasn’t sure what the waffles would taste like so I didn’t order them. I wish I had chosen waffles instead of pancakes looking back though. Also, I loved that there were various bircher muesli on offer in the cabinet of the dessert station which were presented in glass cups.

The buffet itself was very pretty, very lavish and with so many options, it was hard to try everything without feeling over full. I didn’t even get to try everything and I still felt quite full. All in all it was a good breakfast to start the morning and that yoghurt and fruit with their crunchy granola was really a highlight for me for the buffet =)

After the buffet and basketball we caught up with Miss G and Mr D over lunch. Miss G and Mr D have been living in Melbourne for a while so know the best places to eat. They took us to eat at Two Birds One Stone as Miss G was telling me that they serve a yoghurt pannacotta for breakfast (which is served all day) so I was keen to try this out.

Two Birds One Stone is a lovely little cafe located in a small street in South Yarra. There are tables inside and outside of the cafe and when we got there the cafe was quite busy. We took a seat outside as there was no space inside and each time a waitress would come out with various people’s dishes I was having serious food envy. All the food looked so good and delicious and whilst I wanted to eat something savoury I knew my inner sweet tooth was craving the yoghurt pannacotta so I decided to go with that instead.

Corn Fritters

Mr Muscles’s meal: Corn Fritters with house smoked salmon, avocado & snow pea tendrils $17.50

Mr Muscles ordered the corn fritters which looked really lovely on the plate. These corn fritters were a little different from the usual type of fritters we have eaten before. The texture was a lot softer instead of the usual crisiper ones that we usually order from other cafes. Mr Muscles enjoyed his meal however he stated that the serving size was rather on the small side and had hoped that there would be more on the plate.

Mr Muscles ordered an extra side of Ham Hock Beans to go with his corn fritters. He enjoyed his side of beans as it was gone not long after he had eaten his first spoonful.

Two Birds Meal

Mr D ordered the Two Birds meal consisting of scrambled eggs on toast with mushrooms, spinach, heirloom tomatoes, homemade sausage and bacon, haloumi, ham hock beans and an extra piece of toast for Miss G.

When the plate came out I was surprised at how large the serving was for this big breakfast. Mr D and Miss G really enjoyed sharing this meal together. Definitely something to eat when you are feeling extra hungry or just want to indulge in some savoury goodness!

Miss G and I both ordered the yoghurt pannacotta and I couldn’t wait to try it out!

Yoghurt Pannacotta

Yoghurt Panna cotta with Kaffir Lime, Fresh Fruit & Nut Cluster $12.50

The yoghurt pannacotta was soooo good! It was like eating dessert but in a bit of a healthier way and that you could eat this for breakfast or lunch. The nut clusters gave it a nice texture compared to the smoothness of the panna cotta and I liked how you could taste the tartness from the yoghurt. In no time at all, I finished the whole dish and had wished there was more but once again, food coma came into play and I was soon clutching my stomach as I felt that I was still quite full from the breakfast but I really couldn’t say no to pannacotta.

I really want to try a lot of the other dishes next time I go back to visit Melbourne…I saw a few customers order the charred polenta with mushrooms and the smashed avocado and feta on toast…definitely something I’m coming back to try!
